Jen’s Zen Den
My name is Jennifer Coombe and I am a licensed colon hydrotherapist, massage therapist, D.O.U.L.A. and esthetician. I have worked in the personal healing arts and care taking for 25 years as a certified nursing assistant, nanny, birthing assistant, massage therapist and esthetician. I am also an avid photographer and I specialize in family lifestyle portraiture including pregnancy and birth.
I grew up on a small farm in the wide open, rugged plains of eastern Montana eating mostly meat my Dad raised and hunted and vegetables, greens and berries from our 6 acre garden. My younger brother and I had hours of outdoor chores every day and spent a lot of our time under that big, open sky shucking fresh green peas for dinner and canning, gathering strawberries and rhubarb for pies, and feeding the animals. My brother has since expanded our small farm and raises grass fed Angus cattle, sugar beets and barley with his family near where we grew up. I am thankful for this foundation of health that comes from a diet solidly rooted in natural, organic, hand raised whole foods.
The farming life wasn’t for me, however, and I couldn’t wait to get out of Big Sky Country and explore the world. After high school in 1987, I took a full time, live in childcare job as a nanny in the Bay area of California that was posted in the help wanted section of our Billings Gazette. I spoke to the family on the phone and was on a plane in less than a week. That was such an exciting time for me!
I worked as a nanny for the next 8 years both in Santa Cruz, CA and Seattle, WA where I moved to attend college in 1998. I graduated from the University of Seattle in 2007 with a B.A. in Comparative History of Ideas and spent a year teaching English in Prague, CZ which was a wonderful experience and provided incredible insight to an entirely different cultural perspective. When I returned home I became certified as a nursing assistant and took care of several clients nearing the end of life in their homes.
Working as a live-in caregiver in the domestic sphere both as a nanny and then later in nursing gave me a strong sense of compassion and intimacy. Somehow being close to people I cared for through the final phase of life lead me towards birth and in 2000 I completed my training as a D.O.U.L.A. at the wonderful Seattle Midwifery Center, which is now part of Bastyr University, and worked with new Mom’s pre and post birth as well as providing indelible support during the birthing experience.
My passion for photography has been with me since childhood and I developed a special love for lifestyle family portraiture including pregnancy, birth and infant documentary style photography. You can see my work on my photoblog: Jennavision Multimedia. As for the tarot, I have had many decks through the years and find the pulling of cards and the study of their meanings to be deeply meditative and helpful in processing the events around me, providing wider perspective. I enjoy laying out cards for others and using them to explore one’s path and creatively vision for the future.
In 2008 I moved to San Diego and discovered colonic cleansing in Encinitas, CA from my mentor Rebecca Enders from Inner Bliss Rejuvenation Center and started on my own personal path of detoxification, juicing and whole foods nutrition. It changed my health dramatically and I became passionate about helping others achieve the glow and beauty that comes only from vibrant health.
A few years ago I made my way to Austin, Texas where I completed both my esthetics training at Avenue Five Institute and massage therapy at A New Beginning School of Massage in South Austin. I had always loved the spa experience and getting facials was my favorite treat. Bodywork (compassionate touch) had been such an important aspect to my previous work in all its care giving phases that I decided having a license to touch and learning more about massage as therapeutic healing was a good idea.
I began formulating my idea for a healing spa oasis in 2010 and I am sure it will be a transformative project throughout the rest of my career. Jen’s Zen Den is my own cozy, compassionate space of healing, pampering, detoxifying, sharing and gaining support for your personal journey towards your vibrant best. I am also available for birthing support, lifestyle portraiture and bodywork or tarot readings in your home, birthing space, location or event.
I look forward to supporting you on your journey!
